HIGH SPEED Internet FAQs

What is DSL Internet?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line):

  • DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) delivers Internet over the telephone wires into your office.

Traditional telephone service and Dial-up internet only use a very small portion of the available frequency ranges which could pass over a telephone wire.

DSL uses a portion of the remaining frequency ranges. This allows DSL to attain high speeds over the same medium (telephone wires) without competing with your phone service.

Do I need an active phone line to sign up for DSL Internet?
  • No. There are two types of DSL connections; “Regular” and “Dry Loop”
  • Regular DSL requires an active Bell landline.
  • A Dry Loop is installed when an active landline does not exist. Dry loop allows you to use DSL over a dormant phone line (a phone line without active telephone service). A dry loop essentially re-activates the line so that a DSL signal can pass over it, but does not enable you to make or receive calls.
  • Dry loop is required when:
    • You do not have active analog phone service.
    • You use VoIP phone service.
  • Regular and Dry Loop connections have no difference in terms of speed or quality of service. It is simply a way to bring the signal to your office.
What are the system requirements?
  • Operating system: all versions of Windows, Mac OS, and Linux* released over the past fifteen years
  • Processor: 166 MHz and above
  • RAM: 32 MB
  • Disk space: 30 MB
  • LAN card and Ethernet adapter
  • Video card
  • *Please note that while ThinkTel high-speed Internet will work on Linux, it is not supported by our Technical Support team.
Can I connect more than one computer to my ThinkTel Internet service?
  • The modem you purchase with the available DSL plans does include a wireless gateway.
Is there a data transfer limit?
Data transfer is only limited in cases where usage contravenes our Terms and Conditions.
